They Were in Nanjing -- The Nanjing Massacre Witnessed by American and British Nationals

Author: Professor Mr Suping Lu
Publisher: HONG KONG UNIVERSITY PRESS

Bodies Piled Five Feet High.

It was like killing sheep. How many troops were trapped and killed is difficult to estimate, but it may be anywhere between 5,000 and 20,000.

With the overland routes cut off, the Chinese swarmed to the river through the Hsiakwan gate, which became quickly choked. Emerging via this gate today I found it necessary to drive my car over heaps of bodies 5 feet high, over which hundreds of Japanese trucks and guns had already passed.

Streets throughout the city were littered with the bodies of civilians and abandoned Chinese equipment and uniforms.

The helpless Chinese troops, disarmed for the most part and ready to surrender, were systematically rounded up and executed. Thousands who had turned themselves over to the Safety Zone Committee and been placed in refugee centers were methodically weeded out and marched away, their hands tied behind them, to execution grounds outside the city gates.

Like many of my generation I continued to be attentive to the Holocaust, reading the better-published scholarly contributions and witness testimonies as they appeared in translation, watching the better-publicized films and television documentaries. I did this for much the same reasons that I read the memoirs and poems which came out of the trenches of World War I, as a matter of moral and social duty: attention ought be paid to extreme human suffering and we must do what we can to make some human sense out of it.

Only one other group was nominated for extinction. The Nazis began their attack on the Gypsies before their attack on the Jews. In 1933 Gypsies were defined as natural-born criminals, and therefore subject to laws against 'social deviants', while some were being involuntarily sterilized under the Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring. By 1934 they were being corralled in closed camping areas. By 1936 there were Gypsies in Dachau, Germany's first concentration camp for political and social enemies of the state. In that same year, in preparation for the Olympic Games, more than six hundred Gypsies were herded into a closed encampment beside a sewage dump, with a consequent massive loss of life through disease. Some of the survivors were assigned to forced labour until 1943, when they were sent to Auschwitz, but from the first months of the war Gypsies were deported out of Germany to the east under much the same conditions as would later govern the deportation of Jews. After Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union there were mass shootings of Eastern Europe's Gypsies as well as its Jews.

GOVERNMENT APPEAL TO THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS

The Chinese government first condemned the massacre on the international on February 2, 1938, at the sixth meeting at the 100th Session of the Council of the League of Nations in Geneva. On that date, Mr Wellington Koo, first delegate of the Republic of China, reported to the other 15 members of the council about the atrocities that occurred in China since the Eighteenth Assembly in September 1937, when Mr Koo had made an earlier appeal against Japanese aggression. To Mr Koo and other government leaders, the SACK of Nanjing was one of many atrocities PERPETRATED by the Japanese military. At this meeting, as at the previous one, he first highlighted the INDISCRIMINATE bombardment of open towns, which had resulted in the mass killings of Chinese civilians. He stressed that 17 provinces had been bombed and that the victims were MOSTLY women and children.

In calling it a "forgotten Holocaust," Ms. Chang draws connections between the slaughter in Europe and in Asia of millions of innocents during World War II. To be sure, Japan and Nazi Germany would only later become allies, and not very good allies at that. But the events at Nanking -- to which Hiltler surely took no exception -- would later make them moral co-conspirators, as violent aggressors, perpetrators of what would ultimately be called "crimes against humanity."

And maps can really point to places

On 17 December, Mr Steele's second story appeared in the Chicago Daily News.

I saw a scene of butchery outside that gate where the corpses of at least 1,000 soldiers lie in every conceivable posture of death, amid a confusion of fallen telephone and power lines and charred ruins ...

These things, too, I saw:

... Japanese machine-gunners moving through the streets in the moonlight, killing anyone who ran and some who did not; Japanese systematically searching houses and seizing many plainclothes suspects, scores of these bound men being shot one by one while their condemned fellows sat stolidly by, awaiting their turn. ...

I saw the Japanese beating and jabbing helpless civilians, and in the hospitals I saw many civilians suffering from bayonet wounds.

I saw the dead scattered along every street, including some old men who could not possibly have harmed anyone; also mounds of the bodies of executed men.

I saw a grisly mess at the north gate, where what once had been 200 men was a smoldering mass of flesh and bones.
